Villa Zafarraya Review: The Perfect Accessible Villa in Málaga

Finding truly accessible accommodation can be surprisingly difficult. Too often, accessibility feels like an afterthought, with a few adaptations added to a property that was never designed for wheelchair users in the first place. Villa Zafarraya is different.

Located in the mountains of Andalusia province, this accessible holiday home combines thoughtful wheelchair-friendly design with stunning scenery, privacy, and comfort. After spending a week here in May, I can honestly say it is one of the best accessible holiday homes I have visited.

First Impressions

Surrounded by mountains and olive groves, Villa Zafarraya feels peaceful from the moment you arrive. The views stretch in every direction, and the property offers something many accessible accommodations struggle to provide: complete privacy.

The holiday home accommodates up to six guests and immediately feels welcoming. Everything is clean, well maintained, and designed with accessibility in mind from the start.

Accessibility

As a manual wheelchair user, I found the property easy to navigate and comfortable throughout my stay.

The accessible features include:

• High-low bed

• Roll-under sink

• Level-access shower

• Shower chair

• Handles besides both sides of the toilet

• Accessible kitchen

What I appreciated most is that none of these features feel clinical. Accessibility has been integrated into the design without sacrificing style or comfort.

The property is particularly well suited to manual wheelchair users. Guests using larger powerchairs should check measurements carefully, as some doorways may be narrow depending on the size of the chair.

The Pool and Garden

The accessible swimming pool was one of the highlights of our stay. A pool wheelchair and ramp system help make water access easier, and the pool can be heated during cooler months.

The garden is equally impressive. During the day, the mountain views are breathtaking, while in the evening the beautifully lit outdoor spaces create a relaxing atmosphere. No matter where you sit, you’re surrounded by nature.

Exploring the Area

A car is essential here, but that also gives you the freedom to explore some of Andalusia’s most beautiful destinations.

Málaga, Ronda, and Setenil de las Bodegas are all easy day trips. The drives themselves are spectacular, winding through mountains covered in olive trees where you may spot wild goats and sheep along the way.

Málaga was the most accessible destination we visited. The city centre is largely flat, with ramps, smooth pavements, and many step-free shops and restaurants. Ronda was also manageable in the main area as a wheelchair user.

Many smaller mountain villages are beautiful but very steep, making independent wheelchair travel more challenging.

Food and Accessibility in the Region

The region is known for tapas, paella, seafood, grilled meats, olive oil, and local wines. If you prefer cooking for yourself, the nearby supermarkets are well stocked and make self-catering easy.

One pleasant surprise was the number of accessible toilets we encountered during our travels. Compared with other Southern European destinations, accessible restrooms were relatively common, clean, spacious, and usually equipped with grab rails. It made exploring the area much more comfortable.

A Few Things to Consider

Although the property can sleep six people, I think it works best for couples, families, or small groups where only one (or two) person requires accessible facilities. There is one fully accessible bathroom and one bedroom specifically designed for wheelchair users. Multiple wheelchair users could certainly stay here, but it may be less practical. Because of the rural location, I would also recommend travelling with a companion or family member who can assist if needed. Shops, restaurants, and services are all a drive away, and having support available can make the experience more relaxing.

Final Thoughts

Villa Zafarraya is one of the most impressive accessible holiday homes I have visited. It combines accessibility, comfort, privacy, and beautiful surroundings in a way that few properties manage to achieve. For manual wheelchair users looking for an accessible holiday home in Málaga, Spain, it offers something special: the freedom to enjoy a beautiful getaway without constantly worrying about accessibility barriers.
